Over the Forth bridges lies Fife. St Andrews is the home of golf, where St Andrews Links runs the Old Course, and of the ruins of St Andrews Cathedral, once the headquarters of the medieval Scottish Church (Historic Environment Scotland). Falkland Palace and the 17th-century streets of Culross belong to the National Trust for Scotland; across the Tay, V&A Dundee is Scotland’s design museum; and at Dunfermline Abbey, Robert the Bruce was laid to rest.
Getting there
ScotRail from Waverley to Leuchars, then a short bus or taxi to St Andrews; or drive over the Queensferry Crossing.
St Andrews
The Old Course and the Swilcan Bridge, the cathedral ruins and the town; the Old Course Hotel and Fairmont St Andrews for a night.
ScotRail runs to Leuchars, the station for St Andrews.
Fife
Falkland Palace, Culross, Dunfermline Abbey and, across the Tay, V&A Dundee.
Our advice: walk out to the Swilcan Bridge in the evening, when play has finished.
