Stirling Castle, run by Historic Environment Scotland, is central to Scotland’s history; across the valley stands the National Wallace Monument. To the west lie the lochs and hills of Loch Lomond & The Trossachs National Park. On the way from Edinburgh, Linlithgow Palace, birthplace of Mary Queen of Scots, and the Kelpies at the Helix in Falkirk are worth a stop.
Getting there
By ScotRail from Waverley to Stirling (check times on scotrail.co.uk); Lumo also serves Stirling.
