The back story

About Stockbridge and Dean Village: the village in the city

Stockbridge grew up around a crossing of the Water of Leith below the New Town. St Stephen Street holds a cluster of restaurants in the 2026 MICHELIN Guide; Raeburn Place has the shops, and the Royal Botanic Garden is a short walk north. Upstream, Dean Village sits in its gorge below Dean Bridge.

Dean Village

The old milling village on the river, below Thomas Telford’s Dean Bridge.

Walk the Water of Leith from Dean Village to Stockbridge on a Sunday, for the market.

Our advice: finish at the Royal Botanic Garden for the view back to the castle.
